Khao Sok… Your Nature Escape Begins Here

Embrace the beauty of nature through every petal that blooms

Khao Sok Rainforest is one of the most biologically rich areas in Thailand, boasting exceptional biodiversity. It is a tropical rainforest with around 200 plant species per hectare, which is much higher than the forests of Europe or North America, which only have about 10 species per hectare. This is one of the reasons why Khao Sok is considered an important area for scientific study and conservation.

Rafflesia Kerri

The “Bua Phut” flower, also known as “Bua Toom” in Southern Thailand, has the scientific name Sapria himalayana and the common name Sapria Himalayana. It can be found in tropical rainforests, such as in Khao Sok National Park, Phanom District, Surat Thani Province. The Bua Phut is a parasitic plant that has no stem or leaves. It survives by absorbing nutrients from the roots of water vines.

Buttress Root

Pneumatophores are roots that have evolved in certain tree species living in riverbank areas or in places with shallow soil where the main roots cannot penetrate deeply. Pneumatophores are characterized by their broad, spreading structure that extends outward from the base of the tree and connects with the branching roots of the tree. They are commonly found in trees growing in rainforests or humid forests.

White Elephant Palm

The Chalong Palm, or Phaya Thalang Palm, is a native palm species found in the southern part of Thailand and is the only species in the genus Kerriodoxa. The palm tree has a solitary trunk that can grow up to 12 meters tall and often forms large clusters. Its leaves are pinnately compound with a dark green color, spreading out 25-35 leaflets. The underside of the leaflets is shiny white, and the leaf stalks are nearly black, reaching up to 2 meters in length. The flower clusters appear between the leaf sheaths, with 2-4 clusters per plant. The fruits are round and flat, with a yellow-orange color.

Khao Sok Grass

The “Koh Khao Sok” reed is a native plant species found exclusively in Khao Sok, Surat Thani. It grows on limestone cliffs at an altitude of about 100 meters. The plant forms dense clusters, standing upright or hanging down. It has separate male and female plants, and its leaves are strap-shaped, growing up to 50 cm long. The leaf sheaths are about 8-9 cm long, and the leaf blade has fine, short branches.

Canna indica

The Canna indica, also known as “Tong Lin Kwai,” is a climbing plant with a long stem that can grow up to 20 meters. It has a jointed stem capable of rooting to cling onto large trees. The stem produces white latex and propagates by seeds. It thrives in moist conditions and is found in Myanmar, the Indochina Peninsula, Indonesia, Malaysia, and in southern Thailand. In Thailand, it is commonly found growing on other trees in tropical rainforests, peat swamp forests, open woodlands, fruit orchards, and mangrove forests or along riverbanks.
